We've answered many of the common questions here, but if there is something else, or you'd like to find out more, then do please call or email us.

Choosing your wall

As a general rule, we’d recommend getting the largest wall you have space for.

We have loads of size options – some might say too many – comprising two angles, three widths and three heights.

This ensures you can maximise the size of your home wall, working with the space you have.

Even our smallest walls are so much more than a hangboard, and the largest boards of a really decent size.

So whatever space you have, you can be sure we have a wall for you!

Often the most contentious question in the home-wall debate!

The truth is, there is no right answer, and lots to consider in making the decision.

You can read more in our blog article here.

If you haven’t the time to read the article in full, then unless you are really strong and/or looking to train hard go for a 25 degree home wall!

With an appointment, we are happy to show customers around our factory, where we have a couple of walls assembled.

If you just can’t find the size you want within our standard range, then you might want to consider our modular or bespoke options.

You can read more about our Modular System here Modular

And if you are looking for something made to your exact specifications, or to perfectly fit your space then check out our fully bespoke service here Bespoke

Please be aware that due to the wall being made to your exact requirements, it will be at a price premium to cover the extra costs of design and production.

For most people, we recommend the 150mm grid with T-nuts factory fitted. This configures your wall to receive standard M10 bolt-on hand and footholds – be that our Greenholds or holds from another manufacturer.

We use a 150mm spacing for the bolt holes in our Ground-Up walls – this gives the maximum scope for variety within a limited space.

Some purists out there will chose the screw-ons only option – where the wall is not fitted with any T-nuts. This means that you can either drill your own bolt locations, or use screw-on only holds – which are just that!

We understand that our products don’t always fit the bill.

So, if you are looking for something bigger, to integrate with your interior design or property, to wow your friends climbers and non-climbers alike, then you can be sure we will be able to tailor a completely bespoke solution.

We’ve a wealth of experience working directly with clients and design agencies alike to create some truly stunning features.

We have a couple of options, starting with out Modular System, which enables more creative and larger setups which still follow a set of rule, find out more here Modular

Choosing your holds

Our Greenholds are machined from the finest quality birch plywood, always from sustainable sources.

This plywood is not only incredibly strong, but it also results in an beautiful aesthetic with the layers of the ply forming contours to the carefully shaped holds.

Our holds are also fitted with steel inserts in both the bolt and anti-rotation screw holes for durability.

Our holds are supplied with M10 bolts and anti-rotation wood screws for use with T-nuts and 18mm plywood wall panels.

Tools for setting of the holds are not included as standard. The following is required:

Hand hold bolts: 8mm hex key

Hand hold anti-rotation screws: PZ2 driver bit

Foothold bolts: 6mm hex key

All our holds are supplied with M10 bolts and screws to suit a wall panel thickness of 18mm with standard M10 T-nuts.

Whilst we’d recommend you check, it’s reasonable to assume that our holds and bolts are compatible with any home wall or commercial gym in the UK.

In the USA, T-nuts, and accordingly bolts, are imperial – so you will need to source your own 3/8″ bolts – but these will fit the holds just fine.

All of our hand holds are supplied with a second hole suitable for use with anti-rotation screws – but that is not to say that you have to use them – it is personal choice.

A correctly tightened bolt will be sufficient alone to prevent the holds from spinning under normal use.

That said – changes in temperature and humidity can cause the wood to expand and contract a small amount – this can be sufficient to make your holds ‘come loose’.

If you choose not to use the anti-rotation screws then be sure to check they are tight regularly.

If used in a commercial gym setting, we always recommend all fixings are populated fully.

When tightening your holds, we recommend using a standard hex key by hand.

They don’t need to be mega tight, but if you are planning on omitting the anti-rotation screws it is important they are tight enough to not spin.

As you do them up, if you start to hear the wood being crushed under the metal washer, then you are at the maximum.

It’s important not to over-tighten your holds, but we know that most people won’t be doing them up with a torque wrench!

If you are using a torque wrench, we recommend the following:

Handholds: 25Nm

Footholds: 20Nm

We also recommend periodic checking of the bolts for tightness – certainly a double check after one and then two weeks after an initial set in your home.

Being wood, changes in humidity and temperature can cause the wood to expand and contract, which means as the holds acclimatise to your air-conditioned flat or a change in the seasons they can ‘come loose’. All they need is a quick once over, and you’ll be good to go again.

We do not recommend the use of our wooden holds outside.

Whilst made from exterior-grade plywood, the variable humidity affects the moisture content of the wood. This results in variable levels of friction plus, in some cases, the formation of mould.

Our Greenholds are a beautiful and sustainable alternative to the plastic holds you will have seen and climbed at the gym.

Wooden holds are found in these commercial climbing centres too, but generally only in the training areas, and for good reason – wooden holds are much kinder on your skin.

In our opinion, wooden holds are the go-to option for family fun and hard-core training alike on your homewall.

OK, so this is quite a big topic!

The best set of holds will not only depend on you as a climber, but also the wall you intend to use them on.

All our hold sets on the store include a quick steer on where they sit, and how suitable they might be, but if you are looking for specific recommendations then please get in touch and we will be happy to help.

Installation considerations

In our range of Ground-Up walls there is a wall that will fit your space, with a choice of 2 angles, 3 widths, and 3 height options.

The space required varies by model, and needs to include the areas required for your bouldering mat which will extend beyond the footprint of the wall itself.

It’s important to remember that the steeper and higher your wall, the more space will be required both for the wall, but also the fall space and landing pad.

To help work out which model will fit your space, check out the graphic below which gives recommended minimum areas for each model.

In theory, our walls can be installed with no surrounding clearance, but generally we recommend 5mm as a minimum.

When measuring up, be sure to account for skirting boards in the width.

With ceiling height it’s important that you measure in several places, and as close as possible to the intended position for the top of the wall. Ceilings are rarely flat or level, so if you are cutting it fine on clearance this is very important!

The bottom of your Ground-Up wall is smooth wood with rounded edges, so generally is unlikely to damage most floor materials.

If you are especially concerned for your parquet, then you might choose to put something underneath it, but if the floor is clean under the wall, the likelihood of damage is low.

Like any piece of furniture, there is a chance of slightly squashed areas of carpet under the feet, but the pressure on the floor is very low, so these areas are unlikely to be deep or long lasting.

Lofts or attics come in all shapes and sizes, but can present an interesting opportunity to squeeze some climbing real estate into your home.

Floors in lofts are different to those in the rest of your home – are generally are not as strong – but if boarded correctly then generally they will provide a suitable floor for installation.

Remember, measuring up in your loft space will be a 3D puzzle that needs to consider the pitch of your roof.

In addition, the loft hatch must be considered, for which in order to pass the components through will require a minimum of 920mm clear on the diagonal.

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Don’t be tempted to remove sections of timber from your roof structure in order to squeeze in your wall – truss roofs are highly engineered so always speak to a structural engineer before making any modifications.

If suitably protected from the elements, then yes our walls can be used outside, but please be aware that doing so will reduce the expected lifespan of the wall.

We always recommend that you treat the components with a water based wood preservative and varnish in order to minimise the chances of the wood beginning to decay.

The metal fixings as standard are Bright Zinc Plated, which over time will degrade in humid environments, and can result in seized fixings and it being very difficult to dismantle your wall.

It’s also important to take care siting your wall to ensure it is on level firm ground, and raised off the floor to avoid it sitting in standing water.

All of our Ground-Up walls are completely free-standing, which means that installing one in your rented house or flat is no different from any other piece of furniture.

Absolutely no wall, floor, or ceiling fixings are required, so there will be no permanent markings, ensuring happy landlords all round!

Like any piece of furniture, there is a chance of slightly squashed areas of carpet under the feet, but the pressure on the floor is very low, so these areas are unlikely to be deep or long lasting.

Our Ground-Up walls are designed to be completely free-standing – so require the legs to hold them up.

If you are looking to install one minus the legs, then it will require connection to the fabric of your building, be that the wall behind or ceiling above.

This can be achieved in many different ways, and will require some DIY skills – we therefore don’t recommend that you take this on unless you are confident.

If you are taking on this challenge, then please keep in mind that for successful assembly of the wall it must be very accurately levelled and squared-up.

We do offer an installation service, as with our modular and bespoke products, so if required please get in touch for a quote.

Unless you have a specific reason to doubt the integrity of your floor, it should have no trouble supporting the wall within your home.

Common household objects such as a loaded book case and a grizzly bear all weigh more.

Building your wall

Our home walls are supplied with all the tools required to assemble them – just two 5mm and one 6mm hex keys.

A small step ladder can be very helpful (essential for 2.6m height models) to reach the fixings at the top of your wall. If you don’t have a set of steps, all of the shorter models can be assembled by standing on your folded up Landing Pad mat, or with the help of a chair.

We strongly advise against the use of drills or impact drivers during assembly as they can cause cross-threading and over tightening of fixings – it is always best to go old-school so you can feel the tension!

Additional tools are required for setting of the holds – 8mm hex for hand holds, PZ2 driver for anti-rotation screws, and 6mm hex for footholds.

The record for assembly of one of our Ground-Up home walls is just 1hr 17mins – but this is with some practice!

Most of our customers will spend around 3 or 4 hours assembling their board, plus setting time which really is as long as a piece of string.

All of our Ground-Up walls can be assembled by a single person, but it can be easier with an extra pair of hands.

We’ve no doubt there will be a queue of your climbing mates to help out!

All of our products are supplied with full graphic step-by-step instructions – all the beta you will need.

There is also an important pre-amble which we encourage all of our customers read before setting out – we’ve tried to keep it short and sweet.

If you do have any issues along the way, then do please get in touch as we are always happy to help.

Once assembled, your wall is obviously quite a large and heavy structure, so not readily moved in this state, even fully hulked out!

That said, our unique fully bolted construction means that you can easily dismantle to component form, and re-construct in a different location any number of times.

When dismantling your wall, be sure to heed the warnings in the ‘descent path’ section of your instructions, and be careful to closely follow the step-by-step instructions in reverse – remember – in mountaineering most accidents occur on the way down!!

If you avoid using impact guns when setting, then it is highly unlikely that you’d encounter any problems resetting your wall hundreds of times.

If you choose to use them, the anti-rotation screws will make a small hole in the plywood, and if reset frequently, will over time eventually degrade the integrity of the wall. How long this will take is dependant on which and how many holds you use.

Should you be concerned, or just interested in them for aesthetic reasons, replacement panels are available to owners of genuine Interface walls.

Using your wall

Absolutely!

Our walls are great for children, especially paired with a set of Spirit or Flow holds.

Depending on ability, children may find larger holds more suitable.

The world is bigger through the eyes of a child, so while the wall will offer more room for them to climb, they will also have slightly further to fall.

We suggest always having an adult to hand while a child is climbing.

Yes! Many of our customers fix finger boards to the top panel of the wall which is vertical.

Please take care when installing to ensure there is no conflict between the mounting screws and the bolt holes – we recommend not inserting screws within 30mm of a bolt hole.

Our walls can provide a great base station for integration of calisthenics training.

The headboards as standard are fitted with a central T-nut, which can be used with a bolt hanger or eye bolt for attachment of rings, straps, tension bands etc.

Care should be taken not to apply excessive force – since there is a small chance that you might cause the wall to tip forwards – but under normal static scenarios this is unlikely.

If you are in doubt, please drop us a line and we can advise on your specific training setups.

Limitations of use

Our Ground-Up walls are designed to be used by a single person at a time.

If you are considering one of our modular setups or fully bespoke gyms then we will advise specific limitations on the number of users where applicable.

Our walls are suitable for use by a single person up to the following maximum weights:

Narrow Ground-Up Walls: 100kg or 15.7st

Midi Ground-Up Walls: 125kg or 19.7st

Wide Ground-Up Walls: 125kg or 19.7st

Our walls are carefully engineered and should not be modified in any way.

If the standard sizes don’t fit the bill or you are looking for something bespoke, then please get in touch and we will happily look at options from within our modular or fully bespoke options.

Our walls are made from high quality birch plywood, which means that screw-on holds will work with our walls.

If using third-party screw-on holds, we recommend affixing the holds with as many screws as they are designed to take.

If you are a screw-on purist, then please select the screw-on only option when configuring your wall.

If setting screw-ons on your wall with T-nuts, then please take care not to install screws within 30mm of a bolt hole.

Our T-nuts are rated for use with climbing holds, which means that you’re not going to overload them by dyno-ing to a hold, attaching a hangboard or pulling on gym rings mounted with an eyelet.

We carefully test all batches of T-nuts to BS EN 12572.

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Whilst absolutely fine to practise clipping, please don’t try leading on our walls, they’re not rated as fall anchors and may not hold a whipper.

Yes!

If you have holds made by another manufacturer, you can use them in your Interface wall.

If they are bolt-ons, you will need to make sure you have the correct length M10 bolts to fix them – a good rule is to allow a minimum of 2cm of threaded bolt through the back of the hold.

If you are using screw-ons, be aware that any screws which stick out the back of the hold by more than 18mm may stick out the back of your wall. Unlike commercial centres, the back of your Interface wall may be accessible, so take care to avoid a hazardous porcupine!

Our Ground-Up walls are free-standing and standalone products.

If you are looking for a larger wall then please get in touch and we can explore the options from within our Modular range or fully Bespoke setups.

Shipping & Delivery

All of our walls are made to order within 15 working days, and if we can complete it sooner, we will!

We generally hold stock of all sets of holds, which are dispatched much quicker than this.

From then, you will be notified when the courier has received your order and it should be ready for delivery in 2-3 days.

If you need your wall quickly, please reach out and we’ll help in any way we can.

Please note – at peak times of year for example in the lead up to Xmas – we may vary the standard lead times to ensure we don’t let anyone down!

We use a range of couriers to deliver our orders.

All our walls are packaged in several large cardboard boxes.

All our packaging (with a few minor exceptions) is re-usable and recyclable.

It is possible to arrange for collection from our factory.

Please email or call and we can provide a discount code to waive the shipping costs.

Our walls are delivered in large boxes, up to 2.4m long and 50kg.

Our walls are shipped in multiple boxes so that they can be transported one at a time on the receiving end.

That said, they are heavy – up to 50kg – so we do not recommend trying to move them alone.

The courier will only deliver the boxes to your front door – which might be considered the ground floor entrance if you live in a flat – so please be prepared to move them into your house.

If you can’t get help, then we recommend unpacking the boxes and moving the individual parts, each of which are much more friendly on the back!

We use a variety of couriers and constantly re-assess our options to ensure we’re using the best option available to get your wall safely to you.

We currently only sell to customers in the UK (including Highlands and Islands although extra shipping costs apply).

Unfortunately, since Brexit, we still have been unable to find a solution to reliably supply our climbing friends in Europe.

And for our friends across the pond in the USA, unfortunately the shipping costs are ludicrously expensive, sorry!

Yes!

All of our walls are conveniently shipped in multiple boxes rather than on a pallet to allow for easier transportation for you.

If you live on a higher floor, please bear in mind however, that these boxes can still weigh up to 50kg individually and the delivery may have to be received from the ground floor.
